Hello Grand Lakers!
|
This week has been fairly good fishing for us. We caught a
lot of surfacing whites early in the week and then did well using jigging
spoons on the bottom. The white bass fishing is not as consistent as we
would like but we are catching them well most days. Lee Jeffries told me
they surfaced around Governor's Island in the evening for him this week.
It is sure good to see Lee around the lake again. Lee is a local legend
when it comes to fishing Grand.
We caught quite a few black bass this week but the fish we
are getting are not as big as we have been accustomed to. We are using
square billed crankbaits and worms around the docks. We are still catching
them on Shakey head jigs as well.
I am hearing a few reports on some folks catching some good
crappie, mostly out of their docks. I think we had a good spawn this year
and the crappie fishing is going to improve a lot over the next couple of
years.
Fall is just around the corner and this is a great time to
fish Grand. |

See you on the water! |

Hello everyone!

The fishing has been so good lately!
The large mouth are still doing really
good. You can throw just about anything and catch some fish. I have been
doing better with the shaky head lately. If you think you can't catch big
fish on it, try it again. It has been working really good for me this
year.
Sand bass have finally turned on. We've
been doing good on humps with a spoon. We haven't seen that many on top
water this year, but the spoon is really working good.

2nd Annual Rush for Brush
(Photo)
|
|
By Brent Davis, GRDA Fishery Coordinator/Tournament
Director |
|
Our lakes are getting older and some of the
stump beds and rock piles are rotting out or silting in. As a result, some
of our fishing holes are not as productive as they used to be.
Last year GRDA's Office of Ecosystems
Management initiated a program called "Rush For Brush." The goal of the
program is to restore fish habitat that has decomposed over the years. The
program works like this: GRDA provides the materials to build "spider
blocks" (made of concrete block, pvc pipe, and mortar mix) for
artificial habitat. Volunteers come and help build the spider blocks. Once
the blocks have set up overnight, GRDA evenly disperses the blocks among
the volunteers on the following day.
Volunteers can place the habitat in their
favorite fishing spot. GRDA does not care where the habitats are placed as
long as they are in deep enough water to avoid contact with boats, other
watercraft, and people.
Some of the benefits of the "spider blocks"
are: 1.) They provide protection from predators, 2.) They provide a
nursery for the young, 3.) They are difficult to find with a fish locator,
therefore your spot remains a secret, and 4.) They are environmentally
friendly.
So, do you your part of replenishing the
fish habitat by participating in one of our events in the 2nd Annual Rush
For Brush. Please contact Jacklyn Jaggars at (918) 256-5545 ext 4523 or
email to jjaggars@grda.com to reserve your spot today. See the list of
dates and locations below:

Hi folks: |
The bass fishing remains very good. We caught a lot of nice
fish this past week.
We fished mostly at night, using jigs with a pork trailer,
and crank baits.
Sand bass are doing well trolling with rattle-traps, and
vertical jigging with slab spoons.
The crappie have all moved to Oolagah.
I have been fishing in the river below the dam mostly,
doing really well with the catfish and sand bass.
Until next time, good luck with your fishing! |

Hello everyone: |
|
Fishing on Grand Lake has been a challenge
the last week or two. First, we had the 110° heat index to contend with
and then it started raining. I don't think I have seen a wetter August
than this one. When you can get out and fish the catching has been pretty
good.
The white bass are still being caught in
good numbers over the many humps that one can find in the lake. Using a
quarter ounce spoon or three-eighths, drop the spoon down to the bottom
and start working it up a foot or two.
Catfishing, well you're not going to get it
any better than what Jerry and the fellows he had with him on Wednesday
found. They were wanting to catch some for a fish fry they have coming up
and boy did they catch them! They cleaned 78 blues and channels. That's
going to feed a lot of people.
Black bass fishing numbers have fallen off
during the hot weather but guys are still catching a few. Fishing worms,
jigs and crankbaits from 6 to 20 feet deep is where they are being found.
With this cloudy, rainy weather coming in don't forget to try some
topwater baits.
Good Fishing! |

"If you're having trouble finding the fish, it would pay you many times over to get a guide like one of the professionals at Martin Guide Service or other fine guide service on Grand and let them show you where and how to catch fish. They furnish everything -- even clean your fish. If you have a youngster or a guest you want to get into some fish, a guide is the way to go. You'll learn more on a half day guide trip than you'll ever learn on your own. I know. I've been there!"
Lee Jeffery writes fishing reports for area publications and hosts two fishing-related radio programs. |

Hey folks!
|
|
The white bass are still spotty for me but
have been good for the first two hours of the morning. Elk River has been
good early in different spots -- you just have to be lucky enough to be in
that spot. Mid-day has not produced for us.
We caught some surfacing one day last week
but caught most on spoons and even some fish from one foot to nine feet
deep on old reliable firecracker grubs.
I keep looking at the calendar. Snagging
for this fall will start in about a month. It looks like there are plenty
of spoonbill jumping everywhere. These fish will bunch up this fall and
can be snagged all winter. We had a great winter last year. If you are
interested, just let me know.
Check out the new catfish bait Jeff
Williams is promoting. You can find it and pretty much anything else you
might need at Littlefield's Bait, at the entrance to Monkey Island. |

was fantastic in the deep
water. Check out more

Hello Anglers: |
|
Grand Lake is tough right now. The water
clarity is poor from the head waters almost to the dam. Some clear water
can be found in the back of creeks and on the very lower end of the lake.
The water is still cold 44 - 49 degrees. You can find some warmer water in
the calm, but sunny, coves and creeks.
Almost two thirds of the Triton Team
Tournament held on 03/02/08 did not catch a fish. On the positive side
however, 105 teams did manage to catch at least one bass and it took
sixteen pounds to win. The dock talk indicates that most of the bass were
caught on jigs in deep clear water.
Aside from the dirty water issue, I believe
the bass are about to transition from the winter-time pattern to the
pre-spawn pattern. I suspect that in about two weeks we will see a large
improvement in the bass catching, provided the hard cold rains cease. |

Good luck and good fishing! |

Catfishing has ranged from pretty good to
spotty lately. We're
hearing people are catching some spawning channel cats while drifting the
south-lake area.
Crappie are fair to okay in places. We caught some
working ledges using jigs and grubs.
White bass are starting to get good as they move into the main lake
and black bass are doing well.
See you on the
lake!
